Terribly busy in a sometimes panicky, sometimes awesome way. Uni is getting really intense, but the subjects are incredibly interesting so I don't really mind. Especially health promotion and public health are supersayiaaaan. My degree in Sweden focused very much on individual determinants of health, but applying the public health paradigm (which is tricky when you're so used to poking on individual factors more or less alone) have really helped me see how these individual determinants interact with environmental determinants to influence people's health. The cool thing is - I don't even have to work on a population level (even if that seems pretty awesome, especially working with advocacy and policy development.)
I can help individuals through addressing the social determinants of health, focusing on creating supportive environments which enables and empowers clients to have control over their own lives. It's kind of a big deal ;) One of my group tasks has to do with the fact that Australia doesn’t have a national government policy for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. This really made me interested in the processes of advocacy and policy development. It's cool as coffee to see how we all interact with our environments, and how collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches (i.e., health professionals from all kinds of disciplines and government/decision-making positions) can work together to increase equity.
Well. WELL. So okay I may have slept like five hours the last three days and overdosed slightly on the nodozzz and coffee, so I shall end the nerd session now.
